MTN Data Sharing Eligibility and Restrictions: Who Can Share What
Daily limits, fixed amounts and the bundles that cannot be shared.
Quick rule: you can share data only between MTN lines, up to 5GB a day, in fixed amounts, and only from bundles that allow sharing.
6 restrictions to know
1
MTN to MTN only. Reports say data gifting works between MTN lines, not other networks.
2
5GB a day. MTN’s gifting page gives 5GB as the daily maximum.
3
Fixed amounts. 100MB, 200MB, 500MB, 1GB, 2GB, 3GB or 5GB.
4
Some bundles are blocked. XtraData More and Value Data bundles cannot be shared. Welcome Back data bundles cannot be gifted.
5
Borrowed data cannot be shared. MTN’s XtraByte rules say so.
6
Plan limits apply. On XtraValue, sharing is capped at 5GB a day and 10 transactions a month.
| Source of data | Can you share it? |
|---|---|
| Regular data plans (daily, weekly, monthly) | Yes, within the limits |
| XtraTalk and XtraData bundles | Yes, up to 5GB a day and 10 transactions a month |
| Value Data and XtraData More | No |
| Welcome Back data bundles | No |
| XtraByte borrowed data | No |
| Bonus data | Check the offer terms, since many bonuses are not transferable |
Dial *321*2# or *312*8#, or *312*their number*amount#, or text Transfer, the number and the amount to 312.
An example
Say you have 8GB left on a monthly plan and want to send 3GB to your sister. You could send 2GB and then 1GB, which totals 3GB and stays under the 5GB daily limit. If you tried to send 6GB in one day, the part above 5GB would be refused.
Why sharing may fail
- The data comes from a bundle that cannot be shared.
- You have used up the daily limit.
- The amount is not one of the allowed steps.
- The recipient is on another network.
- The number is wrong.
- You do not have enough data left in the bundle.
What the receiver should expect
The shared data usually follows the sender’s bundle rules. Ask the receiver to dial *323*4# after receiving it to see how much they got and when it expires.
Tip: If you cannot share, you can still buy a bundle for someone with Buy for a Friend. That pays from your airtime.
Reports say no. Data gifting works between MTN lines.
Is there a fee?
MTN’s pages do not state one. Check the confirmation prompt.
