MTN South Africa Cheap Data Bundles: 5 Ways to Pay Less Per GB
A per-GB table from MTN’s own terms, the effective-rate check and how to avoid out-of-bundle charges.
The cheapest MTN bundle is not the one with the smallest price tag. Divide price by data, and a very different order appears. Here are the numbers from MTN’s own Internet Bundles terms.
Price per GB, cheapest first
| Bundle | Price | Per GB |
|---|---|---|
| Night Express 1GB | R10 | R10 |
| Daily 3GB | R50 | R16.67 |
| Daily 1.5GB | R33 | R22 |
| 3-day 1.5GB + 200MB YouTube (1 hour) | R42.50 | About R28 |
| Hourly 1GB | R30 | R30 |
| Weekly 6GB | R210 | R35 |
| Weekly 2.2GB | R105 | R47.73 |
| Weekly 1.2GB | R69 | R57.50 |
| Daily 200MB | R15 | R75 |
| Monthly 1GB | R79 | R79 |
A 24-hour bundle can be cheaper per GB than a monthly one, but you pay again tomorrow. Think about how long you will actually need the data.

Out-of-bundle data: turn it off
MTN says you can opt in or out of out-of-bundle (OOB) billing at any time through a store, the call centre, the MyMTN app or USSD. If you have opted out or never chose, you cannot use data after your bundles are used up. That protects you from surprise charges.
Common traps
- Buying small daily bundles repeatedly instead of one weekly bundle.
- Not noticing when a short bundle expires.
- Letting recurring bundles renew when you no longer need them.
- Counting night data as if you could use it all day.
