Where Did My MTN Ghana Data Go? Check and Fix It

Two ways
Open the MyMTN app and tap Data, or dial *138# and follow the path to the balance option. An SMS then shows your remaining data.

Running out of data without warning is one of the most common frustrations on mobile. The fix takes seconds: check your balance regularly. MTN Ghana gives you an app route and a USSD route, and both are free to use on a normal line. This guide walks through each one, explains how to read the result and shows what to do when the numbers look wrong.

Method 1: The MyMTN app

1 Download the MyMTN app for Android or iPhone.
2 Open it and log in with your MTN number.
3 Tap Data.
4 Read your balance and the expiry date for each bundle.

The app is the clearest way to see everything at once, including bonus data and special bundles. It also shows offers made for your number.

Method 2: The USSD menu

1 Dial *138#.
2 Choose 1 to open the bundle purchase menu.
3 Choose 99 for More.
4 Choose 7 for More again.
5 Choose 3 to check your bundle balance.
6 Wait for the SMS with your remaining data.
A tip about menus
Menus are updated from time to time. If your screen shows different numbers, follow the labels on the screen and look for the balance option.

How to read your balance

What you see What it means
Remaining data Megabytes or gigabytes you can still use
Expiry date When unused data is lost
Several bundles Each one has its own balance and its own end date
Bonus data Extra data that may expire sooner than the main bundle
Time-based data Data that works only in set hours, such as early morning or midnight

Why your balance may look lower than expected

  • Background apps, updates and cloud backups use data without asking.
  • A time-based bundle may not work outside its window, so normal data is used instead.
  • A social or video bundle covers only the apps it names.
  • Your phone may be using mobile data while a Wi-Fi network has no internet.
  • Someone may be using your hotspot.

Check data use on your phone

Your phone settings show how much data each app has used. Open Settings, find mobile data or network usage, and look at the list. If one app dominates, you have found the leak. You can restrict background data for that app or turn off auto-play inside it.

Set warnings

  • Set a data warning at a level you choose, such as 80 percent of your bundle.
  • Set a hard limit slightly below the size of your bundle.
  • Turn on notifications in the app.
  • Add the expiry date to your phone calendar.

When the balance check fails

The USSD menu does not respond
Check your signal, try again in a minute and use the app if the problem continues.
No SMS arrives
Wait a few minutes, check that your inbox is not full and try again.
The balance shows zero but you just bought data
Wait a few minutes, check for a confirmation SMS and contact 100 with the time and amount if it does not appear.
The app will not log in
Check the number, request a new code and update the app.

A simple daily routine

  1. Check your balance every morning.
  2. Check again before you start a video or a large download.
  3. Check in the evening and decide whether to top up.
  4. Note when your bundle expires.

Make your bundle last

  1. Buy the size that fits your week, not the biggest one available.
  2. Turn off automatic app updates on mobile data.
  3. Pause cloud backups for photos and videos until you are on Wi-Fi.
  4. Use lighter versions of apps when your phone offers them.
  5. Download maps, music and documents on Wi-Fi.
  6. Turn off mobile data at night if you do not need it.

Questions people ask

Is checking my balance free?
Balance checks are normally free, but menus can change, so read the screen before you confirm anything.
Can I see which bundle will expire first?
Yes. The app lists each bundle with its own end date, so use the earliest one first where you can.
Does unused data roll over?
Rollover depends on the product and your usage. Check the bundle details or the confirmation message when you buy.

Checking your balance takes less time than waiting for a page that will not load. Use the app for detail, the USSD path when you have no data, set warnings and watch for apps that use more than they should. Do it daily and surprises become rare.
