MTN MoMo Benin Payment Pending: Why and How to Fix It
Check what really happened
| 1 | Look for an SMS about the transaction, success or failure. |
| 2 | Check your MoMo balance in the usual way. |
| 3 | Open your transaction history in the MoMo menu or in the MyMTN BN app. |
| 4 | Note the reference, the time, the amount and the receiver. |
| 5 | Ask the receiver whether the money arrived. |
Why transactions fail
| Cause | What you may see |
|---|---|
| Weak network | The request times out with no final message |
| Wrong PIN | A message saying the PIN is not valid |
| Not enough balance or fees | A message about insufficient funds |
| Limit reached | A message about a daily or transaction limit |
| Receiver problem | The receiver’s wallet is not active or cannot receive |
| Pending approval | A prompt on your phone is waiting for you |
Pending payments
When you pay a merchant, you may receive a prompt on your phone asking you to approve with your PIN. If you ignore it or miss it, the payment may stay pending or fail. Check your phone for the prompt and approve it only if you recognise the amount and the merchant.
Do not retry in a hurry
A second attempt can create a double payment if the first one was only delayed. Wait a few minutes, check your history and your messages, and only then try again if the first one clearly failed.
Money left my wallet but did not arrive
- Do not panic and do not send the amount again.
- Keep the SMS and a screenshot of the history.
- Ask the receiver to check their balance and messages.
- Contact MTN customer care or go to a shop the same day.
- Give the number, the time, the amount, the receiver and the reference.
The sooner you report, the easier it is for MTN to trace the transaction.
Wrong number sent
If you sent money to the wrong number, report it at once and give all the details. Recovery is not guaranteed, and it often depends on whether the receiver agrees to return the money. Do not contact strangers in an aggressive way. Let MTN handle the process.
Cash in and cash out problems
Ask the agent to check the transaction. Keep the receipt and your SMS, and go to a shop if needed.
Do not leave the counter. Ask the agent to check, then contact MTN.
Refuse. You only type your PIN on your own phone.
Airtime and bundle purchase failed
If MoMo money was taken but no airtime or bundle arrived, check your balance, then your history. If the purchase is not shown, send MTN the reference with the time and the amount.
Bank to wallet delays
When money comes from a bank, two systems are involved, and delays can happen in either. Check your bank’s app for the status, then check your MoMo history. If both show success but you cannot see the money, contact both sides.
What to keep as evidence
- Confirmation and error messages.
- Screenshots of the history.
- Receipts from agents or shops.
- The receiver’s number and name.
- The time of the transaction, as exactly as possible.
When MTN does not answer fast enough
Follow up with the same reference, visit a shop and ask for a supervisor, and write a short complaint with the facts. If the matter stays unresolved, you may raise it with the telecoms regulator.
A short example
Say you tried to buy a bundle and the screen froze. You did not receive a message. Wait five minutes, check your balance, then open your history. If the history shows the bundle and your balance is lower, the purchase worked and the message was just late. If the balance is lower but there is no bundle, take the reference and the time to MTN.
Prevent failures
- Check the signal before you start.
- Keep a little extra balance for fees.
- Use the MyMTN BN app or the menu you know.
- Do not use unknown links to log in.
- Read the confirmation screen every time.
Questions people ask
Wait a few minutes first. If nothing changes, report it the same day.
It depends on the case. Report it quickly with proof.
Usually not. Agents can help you report it.
Last thought
Most failures are small and fixable if you act calmly. Check first, keep proof and report early.
