Out of Credit on MTN Ghana? Your Options Explained
Running out of airtime at the wrong moment is stressful. A call to a client, a message to a doctor or a mobile money confirmation can all depend on a small balance. MTN Ghana lets eligible prepaid customers borrow airtime and pay it back later through a service called Xtra Time. It is useful, but it costs more than the amount you borrow, so it is best used with care.
How to borrow airtime
| 1 | Dial *506#. |
| 2 | Choose option 1 for Xtra Time. |
| 3 | Select the amount you want to borrow from the list. |
| 4 | Confirm the request. |
| 5 | Wait for the SMS that tells you the airtime has arrived. |
A 10 percent service fee applies to every amount borrowed. It is taken when you repay. If you borrow GHS 1, you will repay a little more than GHS 1.
How repayment works
When you next top up, the network takes back what you borrowed together with the fee, then leaves the rest as usable airtime. This means a small top-up may look like it has vanished. If you borrowed a small amount and top up the same amount, you will see almost nothing new. Plan to top up a little more than you owe.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| You borrow | Airtime arrives on your line |
| You use it | Calls, SMS or bundle purchases |
| You top up | The network deducts the amount and the fee first |
| You see the rest | Only what is left is your new usable airtime |
Who can borrow?
Eligibility depends on your history and usage. Newer SIMs, irregular top-ups or earlier unpaid advances can limit what you can borrow, or whether the option appears at all. If you do not see an amount you want, you may not yet qualify for it. Customer care on 100 can tell you what applies to your number.
Other ways to get airtime in a hurry
| Option | How it works | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Ask a friend to send airtime | They can use the Me2U service on *198# | Someone you trust has spare credit |
| Use mobile money | Buy airtime from your MoMo wallet if it has funds | You have money in the wallet |
| Call me back message | Ask the other person to call you | You only need them to ring |
| Wi-Fi calling or messaging | Use an app over Wi-Fi | You are near Wi-Fi and have no airtime |
| Small voucher | Buy a low-value voucher from an agent | You can pay now and avoid owing anything |
Use borrowing wisely
- Borrow only for something important.
- Check the amount and the fee before you confirm.
- Top up soon after to clear the debt.
- Avoid borrowing for data you could wait for.
- Keep a small reserve once you are repaid.
- Do not borrow from several sources at once.
What if you cannot repay quickly?
Nothing dramatic happens at once, but the debt stays until your next top-up. During that time, you may not be able to borrow again. When you can, top up a little more than you owe and clear it. Avoid the cycle of borrowing, repaying and borrowing again, because the fees add up.
Watch out for scams
Be careful with messages that promise large loans or free airtime for a fee, a link or a code. Real borrowing options appear through official menus. Nobody from MTN will ask for your PIN, password or one-time code. If you receive a suspicious message, ignore it and report it to customer care.
Common problems
You may not be eligible, or the menu may be busy. Try again later or call 100.
Wait a few minutes and check your balance with *124#. If it is still missing, call 100 with the time.
The repayment and fee were deducted first.
Check your balance and repayment status. Ask customer care what is outstanding.
A quick example
Imagine you borrow a small amount on Monday to make an urgent call. On Friday you top up a little more than you owe. The network takes the borrowed amount plus the 10 percent fee, and the remainder is yours to use. If you had topped up exactly the borrowed amount, you would have been left with almost nothing. Always add a margin.
Borrowing airtime is a short-term tool. Know the steps, remember the fee, plan your repayment and keep a small reserve. Used that way, Xtra Time can rescue an important call without turning into a habit.
