Should You Borrow MTN Data or Buy a Small Plan? A Simple Cost Check
How to Borrow Data on MTN Nigeria: XtraByte in 4 Steps
The code, the 15% fee and the five rules, with a quick cost check.
Should you borrow data or buy a small plan?
This is the real question, and it comes down to one number. MTN’s data loan, called XtraByte, charges a 15% service fee including VAT on the bundle you borrow. Buying a small plan with airtime costs the plan price and nothing extra. Borrowing makes sense only when you have no airtime at all.
| Bundle value (example) | 15% fee | You repay |
|---|---|---|
| ₦100 | ₦15 | ₦115 |
| ₦500 | ₦75 | ₦575 |
| ₦1,000 | ₦150 | ₦1,150 |
These figures are an illustration of 15% on plan prices, not MTN’s price list.
How to borrow data in 4 steps
1
Dial *303#.
2
Choose the data option (XtraByte).
3
Pick one of the bundles you are offered.
4
Confirm. The data is added and the cost is taken from your next recharge.
5 XtraByte rules
1
You must be eligible. It is for prepaid customers, based on recharge and usage history.
2
You repay on recharge. The bundle cost plus the fee comes off your next top-up.
3
Clear it before borrowing again. Reports differ on whether you can borrow with a loan outstanding, so repaying first is the safe choice.
4
Borrowed data cannot be shared or gifted with MTN’s data share or gifting services.
5
Limits apply. You can borrow again only while you stay within your credit limit.
Tip: If you have even a little airtime, compare it with the cheapest plan on MTN’s list. A ₦75 daily plan costs less than borrowing and gives you the data right away.
Is the service always available?
XtraTime and XtraByte were suspended for months this year and later restored, so check *303# if a menu looks different.
What happens if I recharge a small amount?
The recharge goes first to the loan. You may see little left until it is repaid.
Is borrowed data cheaper than buying?
No. It carries the service fee on top of the bundle cost.
