Network Down or Phone Fault? How to Tell
Why the network is not always the cause
Mobile internet depends on your phone, your SIM, your bundle and the tower serving your area. A fault in any one gives the same complaint: no internet or slow internet. Working through the list below from easiest to hardest saves time.
Step 1: the phone
- Restart the phone fully.
- Switch airplane mode on for ten seconds, then off.
- Check that mobile data is on and set to the right SIM.
- Install pending system updates on a safe connection.
- Free some storage, since a full phone can slow everything.
Step 2: the SIM
Switch the phone off, remove the SIM, wipe the contacts with a dry cloth and reinsert it. If the SIM is very old, ask a service point whether a swap would help. Testing the SIM in another phone shows whether the fault is the SIM or the handset.
Step 3: the settings
| Setting | What to check | |
|---|---|---|
| Network mode | 4G or automatic, not 2G only | |
| Data roaming | Off when you are at home | |
| Access point | Present and active | |
| Battery saver | May limit background data | |
| VPN or private DNS | Switch off briefly to test |
Change one thing at a time and test after each change, so you know what fixed it.
Step 4: the bundle
A finished or expired bundle looks exactly like a network fault. Check your balance in the app or the menu. A night-only bundle does nothing at midday, and when a bundle ends the phone may use airtime for data, so switch mobile data off if you cannot top up.
Step 5: your location
Buildings, walls, metal roofs and distance from the tower all weaken a signal. Move near a window or outside and test again. If speed is fine outdoors and poor indoors, the problem is building penetration rather than your account.
Step 6: time of day
Towers are shared by everyone connected to them. Evenings and paydays are busy. If the connection is slow only at certain hours, congestion is likely. Move heavy downloads to quieter times.
Step 7: the device
Not every phone supports every 4G band. An older or imported phone may stay on 3G where others get 4G. If another phone with your SIM works better in the same place, the handset is the limit.
When to report to customer care
Report when the problem lasts more than a day in the same place, or when neighbours on MTN have the same problem. Give your number, the phone model, the exact place with a landmark, the time it started, what the phone shows and what you have already tried. Keep the reference number.
Quick checklist
- Restart and toggle airplane mode.
- Confirm an active bundle.
- Set 4G or automatic.
- Check the access point.
- Move to a better spot.
- Report with details if it continues.
