A 4G icon needs three things to line up: a 4G-ready SIM, a phone with the right bands and a coverage area. Miss one and your phone stays on 3G. Here is how to check each.

Band information comes from a phone frequency database. If your phone lacks one band, you may still connect, but coverage can be limited in some places, indoors or in rural areas.

Turn on 4G: iPhone
Open Settings, then Mobile Data, then Mobile Data Options, then Voice and Data, and choose LTE. On a 5G phone, you may see 5G Auto and 5G On, which also include LTE.
How to find your phone’s bands
Open your phone’s specification page on the maker’s website and look under Network or Technology. Match the 4G list against B3 and B7. A phone frequency checker for Nigeria lists the same bands for MTN, so you can cross-check a phone before you buy it.
Do you need a new SIM?
MTN’s older instructions told customers to swap to a 4G SIM at an MTN store. Newer SIMs already support 4G. If your SIM is old and your phone shows only 3G in a good area, ask at a store to check it. MTN’s SIM swap menu lists upgrading to 4G as a valid reason.

- Confirm you are in a 4G area, because 3G may be all that reaches you indoors.
- Check the network mode again after a software update.
- Restart the phone and re-enable the mode.
- Verify the phone’s bands match B3 or B7.
- Test the SIM in another 4G phone.
- Visit a store to check the SIM and ask about an upgrade.
