Router or Phone Hotspot? How to Choose Home Internet in Benin
Phone hotspot or router?
| Choice | Strong point | Weak point |
|---|---|---|
| Phone hotspot | No extra device | Drains the battery and may be slower |
| Pocket MiFi | Portable, runs on its own battery | Small antenna, limited number of users |
| 4G home router | Better signal, more users | Needs mains power, less portable |
| Fixed broadband (if available) | Steady speeds | Depends on installation in your street |
Check coverage at your exact spot
Signal can change from one room to another. Before you pay, test with a phone on the MTN network in the exact place where the router will sit. If the phone shows weak signal, a router with an external antenna may help, but it will not fix an area with no coverage.
Ask these questions in the shop
- What packages are available for routers today?
- Is the data allowance monthly, and what happens when it ends?
- Is the speed limited after a certain amount?
- Can the SIM be used in any router, or only in the one I buy?
- How many devices can connect at the same time?
- Is there a warranty on the device?
- Is installation needed, and is it included?
Choosing an allowance
Count your devices. A single phone for messaging uses little. A family that watches video, joins video calls and downloads updates uses much more. Add up what you use now by checking your phone’s data usage screen for a month, then add extra for the new devices.
Video is the biggest user of data. If you stream every evening, choose a larger package or plan to watch in lower quality.
Where to put the router
- Near a window, high on a shelf.
- Away from metal, microwaves and thick walls.
- In the middle of the home, if signal allows.
- Not on the floor or inside a cupboard.
Set up in six steps
| 1 | Insert the SIM into the router, with the device switched off. |
| 2 | Power the router and wait for the signal lights. |
| 3 | Connect your phone to the router’s WiFi using the label on the device. |
| 4 | Open the router’s settings page, using the address in the manual. |
| 5 | Check the APN, using values given by MTN for your line. |
| 6 | Change the WiFi name and password, then save. |
Keep your WiFi secure
Change the default router password and the WiFi password. Use a long password that is not your name or your number. Turn on the strongest security type on offer. Check the list of connected devices from time to time and remove any you do not know.
Make the data last
- Set app updates to WiFi only on a schedule you choose.
- Lower video quality on streaming apps.
- Pause cloud backups during the day.
- Turn off devices you are not using.
- Check your balance every week.
Troubleshooting
Check your bundle and your APN, then restart the router.
The tower may be busy. Try moving the router or testing at different times.
Move closer, reduce the number of devices and check for interference.
Check the SIM direction and clean the contacts. Ask a shop if it still fails.
Using a router for work or study
If you work online or attend classes from home, stability matters more than raw speed. Place the router where the signal is best, connect your computer by cable if the router has a port, and avoid large downloads during calls. Keep a phone with its own bundle as a backup for important meetings.
When to upgrade or change
- You hit the allowance halfway through the period, every period.
- Speeds fall in the evenings when everyone is online.
- The router is old and does not support the current network.
- You moved to a place with a different signal.
Before you buy a new device, ask the shop whether a change of position or a small accessory can fix the problem more cheaply.
Questions people ask
Not normally, because roaming rules differ. Ask MTN.
Yes, within the number of devices allowed.
Packages differ. Ask whether a package is prepaid or tied to a contract.
Final advice
A router gives the best results when the signal is good, the package fits your use and the device is placed with care. Test, ask, then buy.
