MTN MiFi Setup and Troubleshooting: 6 Steps to Get Online
Insert, connect, subscribe and test, plus the fixes for when the Wi-Fi works but the internet does not.
A MiFi is a small battery-powered box that turns an MTN SIM into Wi-Fi for several devices. Setup is simple, but most failures come from one missed step: the SIM needs a data plan before anything loads.
Set up in 6 steps
Which plans work on a MiFi
MTN lists broadband plans for MiFis and routers on its shop, for example 30GB at ₦9,000, 60GB at ₦14,500 and 120GB at ₦24,000. These plans are reported not to work on ordinary phone SIMs, so keep the broadband SIM in the MiFi.
7 fixes when it connects but nothing loads
| Check | What to do |
|---|---|
| Data plan | Confirm a plan is active and not expired |
| SIM registration | Make sure the SIM is registered with a NIN |
| APN | Enter web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net, leave username and password blank |
| Signal | Move the MiFi to a window or higher shelf |
| Network mode | Set auto, with 4G preferred |
| Restart | Power off, wait 30 seconds, then on |
| Reset | Hold the reset button only as a last step, because it clears your settings |
If the Wi-Fi does not appear
- Check that the battery is charged, or plug in the charger.
- Wait two minutes after switching on, since some models are slow to start.
- Forget the old network on your device and search again.
- Try another phone to rule out the first device.
Speed tips
- Place the MiFi in the spot with the strongest signal, not on the floor.
- Keep it away from microwaves and thick walls.
- Limit connected devices when you stream or join video calls.
- Pause cloud backups and app updates.
Why does my phone SIM not work in the MiFi?
The MiFi needs a data plan. Some broadband plans only work on MiFi or router SIMs.
How do I check the plan balance?
Dial *323*4# from a phone with that SIM, or use the myMTN app.
What if the device is faulty?
Take it to the point of purchase. MTN’s router page mentions a one-year warranty on its 4G router.
