MTN Mobile Data vs Broadband: Which Fits Your Needs?

Phone data is for you, wherever you go. Broadband is for a place. If you share internet with others, work from home or stream a lot, a router can cost less per GB. Here is how to decide.

Cost per GB

Plan Type Price Per GB
36GB monthly Phone ₦11,000 ₦306
25GB monthly Phone ₦9,000 ₦360
60GB monthly Router ₦14,500 ₦242
120GB monthly Router ₦24,000 ₦200
200GB monthly Router ₦37,500 ₦188
Ruby 260GB (FUP) Router ₦45,000 ₦173

Router plans come from MTN’s shop and router page, and they need a router or MiFi SIM. Phone plans come from MTN’s help page.

What each is best at

Need Better choice
Moving around, calls and SMS Phone data
Wi-Fi for many devices at home Router or MiFi
Heavy streaming or downloads Router plan
Occasional browsing Phone data
A backup connection A MiFi that fits in a bag

6 signs you need broadband

  • Several people share one connection.
  • You work from home on video calls.
  • Your phone hotspot drains the battery.
  • You use more than about 30GB a month.
  • Your home has a good 4G or 5G signal.
  • You want one bill and one plan for the household.

Hidden costs

  • The device: MTN lists a standard 4G router at ₦9,000, a premium at ₦14,500, a MiFi at ₦15,000 and a 5G router at ₦40,000 on its broadband page. Its shop has shown higher prices.
  • Placement: a weak signal needs a better spot or an outdoor setup.
  • Fair-usage caps on unlimited plans.
  • Calls still need your phone SIM.
Test first: Use your phone at the exact spot where the router would sit. If the signal is poor, a router will not fix it.

An example household

A family of four streams video and studies online, using about 150GB a month. On a router plan at ₦24,000 for 120GB, the bill is about ₦200 per GB. The same use on 25GB phone plans at ₦9,000 each would cost far more. For one person using 10GB, a phone plan is simpler.

A simple rule

If you use under about 25GB and mostly on the move, stay on phone data. If you use over 60GB at one place, price a router and a broadband plan.

Can I use broadband plans on my phone?

Reports say they are for MiFi and router SIMs only.

Is 5G broadband better?

It can be faster, but only where 5G coverage reaches your address.

Can a MiFi replace a router?

For a few devices, yes. For a busy home or office, a router handles more.
