Is MTN Down Right Now? How to Tell If It Is You or the Network
MTN Network Problems Today: 8 Checks and Fixes
How to tell if it is your phone, your area or the network, and where to report it.
When MTN stops working, the first job is to find out whether the problem is your phone, your area or the whole network. Check in this order and you will know in five minutes.
8 checks and fixes
| # | Check | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Airplane mode | Switch it on for 10 seconds, then off |
| 2 | Restart | Power the phone off and on |
| 3 | SIM | Remove and reinsert it, then test in another phone |
| 4 | Network mode | Set automatic, with 4G or 3G preferred |
| 5 | Manual search | Choose MTN yourself in the network settings |
| 6 | Your location | Move outside or near a window |
| 7 | Balance and plan | Check *310# and *323*4# |
| 8 | Other MTN users | Ask someone nearby on MTN if they have service |
Is it you or the network?
1If another MTN phone nearby also has no service, the problem is local.
2If another network works but MTN does not, it is MTN’s network or your SIM.
3If your SIM works in another phone, the first phone is the problem.
4If it works elsewhere but not at home, the cell near you may be down or congested.
Where to report
- Dial 300 from another MTN line, or use WhatsApp on 09033000001.
- Post on MTN’s official social pages with your area and the time it began.
- Escalate to the NCC on 622 if MTN does not fix it, using the ticket number you got.
Compensation rules
A 2026 report says the NCC directed operators to compensate customers for poor service in line with quality benchmarks. Keep a record of the dates, times and places affected, because it helps any complaint.
Keep proof: screenshots of no-service screens, with the time and place, are more useful than a general complaint.
What to note for your complaint
- The exact place, such as street and area.
- The times the problem started and ended.
- Whether calls, SMS or data were affected.
- Whether neighbours on MTN had the same problem.
Common local causes
- Power outage at a mast.
- Heavy congestion at peak times.
- Maintenance or upgrades in the area.
- Weather, which can affect signal.
Does MTN publish outage news?
MTN uses its social pages and customer care. Check @MTNNG.
Will I get my money back for a bad day?
Not automatically. Raise a complaint with the details.
Should I swap my SIM?
Only after the checks above, because most problems are not the SIM.
