MTN Rwanda SIM Registration and Replacement: What You Need and Where to Go
In-person registration, the SIM swap process and the *125# check that shows every SIM on your ID.
Rwanda requires every SIM to be registered in your own name, in person, with your National ID checked. The same strict process applies when you replace a SIM. Here is what to bring and what to expect.
What the regulator requires
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| In person only | Go to an MTN service centre, an authorised agent shop or a kiosk |
| National ID check | Your ID is checked against the national identification database |
| Photo | A picture of you is taken, to confirm you are the ID holder |
| Your own name | The SIM is registered on your ID, not someone else’s |

Check which SIMs are on your ID
Dial *125# to see the SIM cards registered under your ID. The regulator advises doing this regularly. If you see a number you do not recognise, you can deregister it yourself through the same menu.
Why this matters
SIM swap fraud happens when someone takes over your number to reach your accounts. The in-person checks make that harder. Protect yourself by acting quickly if your phone loses signal without reason.
If your phone suddenly has no network
- Test the SIM in another phone.
- Check *125# for SIMs you do not know.
- Call 100 from another line and say your SIM may have been swapped.
- Tell your bank and your mobile money provider.
Can a friend register a SIM for me?
The rules require the ID holder to be there in person.
Does a SIM swap change my number?
No. The number moves to the new SIM.
Is there a fee?
Ask at the service centre. Fees differ by situation.
