How to Fix MTN SIM Registration Problems: 7 Causes and Solutions

A SIM that is not properly registered can lose calls, data or access to some services. Most registration problems come down to seven causes, and each has a clear fix.

7 causes and solutions

Problem Likely cause Fix
SIM says not linked to NIN Linking never completed Dial *996# or *785*NIN# from that number
NIN does not match Name or date of birth differs between NIMC and the SIM record Correct the record at NIMC, then resubmit
Link fails with an error Wrong NIN digits or a network timeout Check the 11 digits and try again later
Line restricted or barred Registration incomplete Check status at nin.mtn.ng/nin/status and link again
Pre-registered SIM Sold with someone else’s details Re-register with your own NIN at an MTN store
Biometric capture fails Poor fingerprint or face match Retry at an MTN service centre
Too many lines on one NIN Limit reached Ask MTN which lines to release

How to check where you stand

1
Open nin.mtn.ng/nin/status and enter your MTN number. You get your linking status after an OTP.
2
Dial *996# on the line and follow the prompts. It works across networks.
3
If you do not remember your NIN, dial *346# with the number you gave NIMC.

If it still will not link

  • Visit an MTN store with your NIN, or Virtual NIN, and ID.
  • Ask for a registration update, not a new SIM.
  • Take a screenshot of any error and note the time.
  • Call 300 if the store cannot resolve it.
Why mismatches happen: a NIN holds the name and date of birth you gave NIMC. If your SIM record spells your name differently, the match can fail. Fix the NIN data at NIMC first, because that is the source MTN checks.

Keep a record

Save the SMS confirmations you receive and take screenshots of any error. If you must visit a store, those messages show what you already tried and save time at the counter.

About pre-registered SIMs

Some sellers hand over a SIM already registered to someone else. The regulator has told operators to stop this. If your line was registered by a stranger, you do not truly own it on record, so re-register with your own NIN.

Do not pay agents who promise to link your NIN for a fee. The regulator says linking is free.

Will an unlinked SIM be blocked?

The regulator has set deadlines and barring in the past. Link your NIN to be safe.

Can I link more than one number?

Yes, within the limit MTN applies to your NIN.

Is an OTP safe to share?

No. Only type it into MTN’s own page or prompt.
