MTN Rwanda WhatsApp and YouTube Bundles – WhatsApp Bundle Rules for Chat and Calls
MTN Rwanda WhatsApp and YouTube Bundles: What Is Available and What Is Not
The WhatsApp chat bundle, why YouTube uses regular data, and 7 tips for cheaper video.
MTN Rwanda sells a dedicated WhatsApp bundle for chat. For YouTube, it is a different story, and the right plan is a regular data bundle chosen with care. Here is how to handle both without wasting money.
WhatsApp: what the bundle does
| Use | Covered by the WhatsApp bundle? |
|---|---|
| Text messages and voice notes | Yes |
| Photos and status | Yes, as chat data |
| Voice and video calls | No. Needs a regular bundle or airtime |
| Links that open in a browser | No. Uses regular data |
Buy it through *154*2# by choosing option 5. If you hold a regular bundle as well, the WhatsApp bundle is used first for chat, and the regular bundle only after it runs out.
YouTube: no dedicated bundle
MTN Rwanda’s social media bundles cover WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. YouTube is not in that list, so video uses your regular data bundle. Choose a bundle that fits how much you watch.
Cost per GB of regular bundles
| Bundle size | Price | Per GB |
|---|---|---|
| 1GB | RWF 1,000 | RWF 1,000 |
| 2.5GB | RWF 2,000 | About RWF 800 |
| 4.3GB | RWF 3,000 | About RWF 700 |
| 7GB | RWF 5,000 | About RWF 714 |
| 11GB | RWF 7,000 | About RWF 636 |
| 30GB | RWF 10,000 | About RWF 333 |
Validity changes with the bundle type, so read it in the *345# menu before you pay. The pattern holds: the larger the bundle, the less each GB costs.
7 tips for cheaper video
1. Pick standard quality on mobile data.
2. Turn off auto-play in every app.
3. Download over Wi-Fi when you can.
4. Close the app when you stop watching.
5. Buy a bundle that matches the week, not the day.
6. Check your balance with *345*5# before you start a long video.
7. Use a social bundle for chat so video data lasts longer.
When the WhatsApp bundle runs out
WhatsApp then uses your regular bundle or airtime, if you have it. With neither, chat stops. Top up before you reach zero.
Can I use the WhatsApp bundle for status videos?
Status media is part of chat use, but large uploads use more data than text.
Is there a YouTube bundle coming?
MTN Rwanda has not announced one on its social bundle page.
How do I check what is left?
Dial *345*5#.
