MTN South Sudan Network Problems and Solutions
Do this first: the two-minute reset
| 1 | Switch airplane mode on, wait ten seconds, switch it off. |
| 2 | Restart the phone fully. |
| 3 | Check that the SIM is in the right slot, and that mobile data is set to the MTN SIM. |
| 4 | Check your balance and your active bundle. |
| 5 | Walk outside or move near a window, then test again. |
This simple routine fixes a surprising number of problems, because phones sometimes hold on to a weak connection after a signal drop.
Find your problem
| What you see | Likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| No signal bars at all | Coverage gap, SIM fault or network outage | No signal section |
| Bars but calls fail | Low balance, congestion or a barred line | Calls section |
| Bars but no internet | No bundle, APN or data switch | Internet section |
| Internet is very slow | Weak 3G, crowded cell or background apps | Slow data section |
| SMS not arriving | Full inbox, network delay or blocked sender | SMS section |
| Works in some places only | Coverage | Coverage section |
No signal at all
If you see no bars, first check whether other phones near you also have no signal. If they do, the problem is local. If they do not, the problem is your phone or SIM.
- Take the SIM out, clean it gently with a dry cloth and put it back.
- Try the SIM in another phone. If it works there, your phone is the cause.
- Check that the network mode is set to automatic.
- Try selecting the network by hand in the mobile network settings.
- If the SIM is damaged, ask an MTN shop for a replacement.
Network outages and upgrade work
Sometimes the cause is on MTN’s side. The company has been upgrading towers from 3G to 4G and adding new 4G+ sites in several parts of the country. While a site is being upgraded, people nearby can lose service for a few days. This has happened in towns, and it is not your phone.
Power cuts and fuel shortages at a site can also take a tower offline. Roads and weather can delay repair teams. If everyone around you is affected, report it and be patient.
If neighbours on MTN have the same problem and your phone works on another network, the cause is probably the tower. Call 100 or send a WhatsApp message to 0920002200 to report it.
Calls will not connect
- Check your airtime. A call may fail if your balance is too low.
- Dial the number in full, with the correct prefix.
- Try a short call to an MTN number. If it works, the other network may be congested.
- Turn off call barring and call forwarding if you did not set them.
- Try a call at another time. Evening peaks are busiest.
If the call connects but you cannot hear anyone, check the phone’s volume, the mic and your headset. Test on speaker.
Poor call quality and dropped calls
- Move away from thick walls, metal roofs and basements.
- Hold the phone higher and away from your palm, which can block the antenna.
- Switch off Wi-Fi calling if it is enabled and the Wi-Fi is weak.
- Try setting the phone to 3G only if 4G keeps flipping on and off in your area.
- Update the phone software.
Internet is not working
If calls work but the internet does not, check data in this order.
- Is mobile data switched on for the MTN SIM?
- Do you have an active data bundle? Check the myMTN app.
- Do you have airtime if the bundle is empty?
- Is the APN entry selected? See the settings guide.
- Does a browser work even though the app does not? If so, clear the app’s cache.
Slow data
Slow internet has many causes. Some you can fix and some you cannot.
Move to a spot with better signal. Even a few metres can change speed.
At busy times, many people share one site. Try early morning or late at night.
Updates, backups and video auto-play eat your bundle and slow everything. Turn them off.
Some old phones do not support 4G, and some old SIMs are slow to attach. Ask MTN about a SIM swap.
Some bundles slow down after a fair-use limit. Check the terms of your bundle.
3G, 4G and 4G+: what the labels mean
The label on your phone tells you which kind of connection you have. 2G is slow and good for calls and texts. 3G can handle messaging and light browsing. 4G is the speed most people expect for video and downloads. MTN describes some newer sites as 4G+, which means faster than standard 4G where available.
Your phone must support the bands used locally. If your phone shows 3G where a neighbour gets 4G, check whether your handset and SIM both support 4G.
Coverage: why it works here but not there
South Sudan is large and has areas where towers are far apart. Remote villages, river areas, forests and hilltops can all have weak signal. MTN has been adding sites in rural areas, but coverage still varies widely.
- Ask neighbours which spot in the house gets the best signal.
- Try going outside rather than staying inside a thick-walled room.
- Consider a signal booster only if MTN confirms there is a signal to boost.
- Report poor coverage to MTN, because reports help them plan.
SMS problems
- Check that the message centre number in your phone is set to automatic.
- Delete old messages if the inbox is full.
- Check whether the sender is blocked.
- Wait ten minutes. Network delays are common.
- Restart the phone and ask the sender to try again.
Mobile money and OTP problems
MTN MoMo depends on the network. If a MoMo request fails halfway, do not repeat it straight away. Check your balance and your message history first. Then try again once the signal is stable. If money left your wallet and the receiver did not get it, contact customer care with the time and amount.
Dual SIM and phone settings that cause trouble
- Make sure data and calls are set to the SIM you want.
- Turn off battery saver if it blocks background connections.
- Check that the date and time are automatic. A wrong clock can break secure connections.
- Reset network settings as a last step. This clears saved Wi-Fi and APN entries, so write them down first.
When to contact MTN
Call 100 or message 0920002200 on WhatsApp when the problem lasts more than a day, when many people are affected or when you suspect a billing error. Give your number, your location, the time the trouble started and what you have already tried. Clear details help the agent route your report.
| 1 | Write your number and your location, such as the town and the area. |
| 2 | List what you tried: reset, restart, SIM swap, other phone. |
| 3 | Note the time and date the fault began. |
| 4 | Contact MTN and ask for a reference number. |
| 5 | Follow up with that number if the fault is not fixed. |
Reporting a problem effectively
Short, factual reports get action. Say “No signal in Juba since morning, restart did not help” instead of “Your network is terrible.” Mention whether other people are affected. If you have a screenshot of the error, attach it.
Small habits that prevent trouble
- Keep your phone software up to date.
- Keep a small reserve of airtime.
- Save the customer care number in your contacts.
- Avoid cheap, damaged SIM trays or loose SIMs.
- Do not install apps that promise free data or signal boosts.
Protect yourself from scams during outages
When the network is down, scammers send messages offering “restored service” or “compensation”. Do not click links and never share your PIN. MTN will not ask you for your MoMo PIN.
Keep a simple fault log
If the same problem comes back, write it down for a week. Note the time, the place, the signal bars, what you were doing and whether the problem went away by itself. Patterns appear fast. You may find the trouble only happens at lunchtime, or only in one room, or only when many people are online. A clear log makes your report to MTN far stronger.
| Date and time | Place | Bars shown | What failed | What fixed it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday 8:00 | Kitchen | 1 bar | Calls drop | Moved to the yard |
| Tuesday 13:00 | Market | 4 bars | No internet | Bundle had expired |
| Thursday 20:00 | Bedroom | 2 bars | Slow video | Waited until late night |
The rows above are only an example of how to fill it in.
At home, at work and on the road
Find the best signal spot and keep your phone or MiFi there. Thick walls and metal roofs block signal, so a window sill or an outside wall often works better.
Many people share one tower in busy town centres, so speeds fall during working hours. Schedule big downloads for early morning or late evening.
Signal changes as you travel and your phone may cling to a weak tower. Toggle airplane mode when you reach a town to force a fresh connection.
Power cuts and your phone
When the grid fails, home routers and phone chargers fail too. A low battery makes a phone reduce its radio power, which weakens signal. Keep your phone charged, carry a power bank and switch on battery saver only when you must, because it can limit background data and delay messages.
MiFi and router problems
If you use a MiFi or router, restart it first. Place it high, away from the floor and from metal objects. Check that it is set to the right network mode and that the SIM has data. Some devices need their own APN entry, so use the settings guide if the lights show a connection but pages will not load.
Signal bars do not tell the whole story
Bars show how strong the signal is, not how free the tower is. You can have full bars and slow internet if hundreds of people are using the same site. You can also have one bar and a perfect call on a quiet tower. Judge your network by results, not by the icon alone.
Peak hours and how to plan around them
| Time of day | What usually happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Quiet towers and faster data | Start big downloads and updates |
| Midday | Busy in towns and markets | Keep calls short, use text if you can |
| Evening | Heaviest load as people stream and call home | Avoid video, or lower its quality |
| Late night | Quiet again | Good time for uploads and backups |
These are common patterns, not fixed rules. Your own fault log will show what happens in your area.
Heat, cases and phone health
A phone left on a dashboard or in strong sun can overheat and slow its radio. Thick metal cases and magnetic mounts can block the antenna. If your signal improves when you take the case off, you have found the cause. Also check that the SIM tray closes firmly, because a loose SIM drops the connection whenever the phone moves. A phone that is several years old may need a battery or SIM tray repair before any network fix will hold.
Have a backup plan
- Keep a second SIM from another network if your work depends on being reachable.
- Tell close contacts how to reach you by SMS if calls fail.
- Download maps and important files while you have a good connection.
- Know where the nearest MTN shop is, in case you need a quick SIM swap.
- Keep the numbers of two or three people who can pass on urgent messages.
Questions people ask
Power cuts can switch off a site. Heavy rain and storms can also affect service. It may return in the morning.
Refunds are not automatic. Ask customer care what is possible if you lost a bundle during an outage.
Another operator may cover your area better. Test with a friend’s SIM before you decide. Keep your MTN number if you use MoMo.
Heat can make phones slow and drop connections. Keep your phone out of direct sun.
Sometimes. An old phone with a worn antenna or no 4G support limits you.
The quick summary
Reset, check the basics, test the SIM in another phone, and look for signs of a local outage. If nothing works, report the fault to MTN with clear details. Most problems have a simple cause, and the ones that do not need MTN’s help.
