Bars but No Internet? Check Your Access Point
What the settings do
Your phone needs an access point name, called an APN, to reach the mobile internet. New phones usually load it by themselves. Problems often appear after a factory reset, a SIM change or when a SIM is moved to a different phone.
Check these first
- Confirm you have an active data bundle or enough airtime.
- Make sure mobile data is switched on.
- Restart the phone.
- Set the network mode to automatic or 4G.
- Test again outdoors.
Many cases of no internet end after these steps, so do them before you change anything else.
Adding an access point by hand
The wording differs between phone brands, but the path is similar.
- Open Settings and go to Mobile network or Connections.
- Choose Access point names.
- Select Add or New APN.
- Enter the name and the APN value supplied by MTN Cameroon.
- Leave other fields as they are unless the instructions say otherwise.
- Save, select the new access point and restart the phone.
Troubleshooting table
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bars but no data | No bundle, or wrong access point | Check the bundle, then re-enter the access point | |
| Only 3G shows | Network mode | Allow 4G or automatic | |
| Slow after a reset | Default access point missing | Add it again | |
| Messages fail | A different setting is needed | Ask customer care |
Dual SIM and hotspot notes
On a dual SIM phone, mobile data must be set to the SIM that holds your bundle. Menu names differ between brands, so look for words such as mobile data SIM or preferred SIM. If a laptop connects through your hotspot but gets no internet, switch the hotspot off and on and check the sharing settings. Some plans limit sharing.
Beware of fake settings messages
Accept a settings message only if you asked for it and it comes from MTN. A message asking you to click an unknown link or send your PIN is a scam.
Quick checklist
- Confirm the bundle and mobile data.
- Restart the phone.
- Set network mode to automatic or 4G.
- Re-add the access point only if needed.
- Keep your settings written down.
