MTN South Africa Internet Settings and APN

Quick fix
For most phones the internet settings arrive automatically. If data does not work, add or check an access point named internet and restart.

You put the SIM in, switch on mobile data and nothing loads. This is one of the most common problems after buying a new phone or changing SIM. The cause is often a missing or wrong access point name, known as an APN. This guide explains what it is, how to check it on Android and iPhone, and what else to try before you contact support.

What an APN is

The APN tells your phone how to connect to the network for internet access. Think of it as the address of the gateway between your phone and the internet. When it is correct, data works. When it is blank, mistyped or set for another network, your phone shows signal bars but pages will not open.

The setting to use

Field Value
Name MTN Internet
APN internet
Username Leave blank
Password Leave blank
Authentication type None
APN type default,supl

Keep everything else at the phone’s default. If your phone already has an MTN entry and data works, leave it alone. Change settings only when you have a problem.

Check the basics first

  1. Make sure mobile data is switched on.
  2. Make sure airplane mode is off.
  3. Check you have an active bundle or airtime.
  4. Restart the phone.
  5. Insert the SIM again and wait a minute for the network to register.

Many problems end here. If the bars show service and your balance is fine, move on to the APN.

Add the APN on Android

1 Open Settings and go to Network or Connections.
2 Choose Mobile network and then Access point names.
3 Tap the plus sign to add a new APN.
4 Enter the name and APN from the table above.
5 Leave the username and password empty.
6 Save, then select the new entry.
7 Restart the phone and test a web page.

The menu names vary between phone brands, but the path is similar. If you cannot find it, search for APN in the settings search bar.

Check settings on iPhone

1 Open Settings and tap Mobile Data or Cellular.
2 Tap Mobile Data Network.
3 Check the APN field under Mobile Data.
4 Enter internet if the field is empty.
5 Leave the username and password blank.
6 Restart the phone and test again.

Some iPhones receive carrier settings automatically. If a carrier settings update appears, accept it.

Choose the best network mode

If your phone supports 4G, set the preferred network type to the automatic option that includes 4G or LTE. Forcing a mode that is not available in your area leaves you without data. If you live in a place with weak signal, try switching to automatic or to 3G temporarily and see whether the connection returns.

Reset network settings

If nothing works, a network reset clears saved Wi-Fi networks, APN edits and other connection settings and returns them to default. Back up what you need, run the reset, restart the phone and wait for the network to set itself up again.

Common problems

Signal bars but no internet
Check the APN, make sure data is on and confirm that you have a bundle or airtime.
Internet works on one app only
Look for an app data restriction, battery saver or a data saver setting that blocks background data.
Data is slow
Check your signal, try a different position, and look at whether a bundle is nearly finished.
Works after restart then stops
A faulty SIM or an unstable network connection may be the cause. Try a different phone or a SIM replacement.
Phone says SIM locked
Do not guess the PIN. Too many wrong tries lock the SIM and you may need a code from the network.

Settings for routers and MiFi

A router or MiFi device uses the same APN in its own settings page. Enter the same name and APN there, leave the username and password blank, save and reboot. If the device was bought for another network, it may be locked to that network and will need to be unlocked.

When to contact support

  • The APN is right and data still fails.
  • You get an error that mentions registration or provisioning.
  • The problem follows the SIM into other phones.
  • You suspect the SIM is damaged.

Most internet problems come down to data being off, a missing bundle or a wrong APN. Work through the checks in order, change only what you need, and restart after each change. If it still fails, a different phone test will tell you whether the phone or the SIM is the culprit.
