How to Retrieve a Lost MTN SIM Card: 7 Steps in Order
Block it, protect your bank, then retrieve the number with your NIN. Includes proxy rules.
7 steps in the right order
If you are abroad or cannot go
MTN allows a proxy swap. Both you and your proxy need a NIN. The proxy must be an MTN customer for more than 30 days with a valid NIN, and must bring hard copies of your documents, proof of ownership (the SIM pack, eSIM QR profile or an affidavit) and a signed request letter. MTN asks you to email its support team first so the store knows to expect the proxy.
Self-service option
A recent guide reports a self-service swap in the myMTN app for eligible prepaid customers. It needs a blank unregistered MTN SIM and face verification against your NIN record, and it sends you to a store if verification fails. Confirm that it is available for you before you rely on it.
What can delay you
- A NIN that does not match MTN’s records.
- A number that is not registered.
- Wrong answers to the usage questions.
- Going to an unofficial shop. Use MTN stores and authorised outlets only.
How much is the fee?
MTN calls it a token fee and does not list one fixed amount on these pages, so ask in store.
Will I keep my airtime and data?
The number moves to the new SIM. Ask MTN what happens to balances on your line.
