MTN XtraSpecial Plans and Eligibility: Prepaid, Postpaid and BVN Rules
MTN XtraSpecial Plans and Eligibility: Prepaid, Postpaid and BVN Rules
What XtraSpecial Postpaid offers, who can join, and what the old prepaid guides get wrong.
XtraSpecial means two different things depending on who you ask. Older guides describe a prepaid plan. MTN’s own pages today describe a postpaid one. Knowing which is which saves you from chasing a plan you cannot get.
XtraSpecial Postpaid at a glance
| Feature | What MTN says |
|---|---|
| Call rate | Flat 20k/sec (₦12/min) to all networks, from the first second |
| Access fee | No daily or monthly access fee |
| Data | ₦3.07/MB pay-as-you-go |
| SMS | ₦6 per SMS, on-net and off-net |
| Bundle | 25GB monthly postpaid bundle for ₦7,000 |
| International | Discounted rates to 5 countries |
Who is eligible?
Existing prepaid customers can move to postpaid by dialling *409# and entering their BVN. Only customers on consumer postpaid plans, such as XtraSpecial Postpaid and XtraSpecial Postpaid VIP, can buy the postpaid data bundles. Customers on other plans are asked to consent to a free migration when they try to subscribe to a bundle.
5 steps to get it
Is the data cheaper?
| Plan | Data | Price | Per GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postpaid monthly bundle | 25GB | ₦7,000 | ₦280 |
| Prepaid monthly plan on MTN’s list | 25GB | ₦9,000 | ₦360 |
On these listed prices, the postpaid bundle saves about ₦80 per GB. That helps only if postpaid billing suits you.
What MTN’s page does not say
- How billing, credit limits or deposits work.
- Whether you can go back to prepaid.
- Eligibility checks beyond the BVN step.
Ask MTN on 300 or visit a store for these answers before you migrate.
What about XtraSpecial Prepaid?
Older articles describe a prepaid XtraSpecial plan at 15k/sec with special data plans, such as 5GB for ₦1,500 and 15GB for ₦3,500. MTN’s current voice menu only lists XtraSpecial Postpaid. Do not rely on the prepaid details without checking the myMTN app.
Who it suits
- Heavy callers who spend more than 100 minutes a month and want the lowest per-minute rate.
- Data users who need a large monthly bundle and are happy with postpaid billing.
- People with a BVN ready, because the migration needs it.
If you call little and mostly use data, a prepaid plan with no billing commitment may suit you better.
