How to Replace a Damaged MTN SIM Card in 5 Steps
How to Replace a Damaged MTN SIM Card in 5 Steps
What to check first, what MTN needs, and how to avoid swap fraud.
Is it the SIM or the phone?
A SIM that stops reading looks the same as a phone fault. Swap it into another phone and see. If it fails there too, or the gold contacts are scratched, bent or cracked, it needs replacing. Do not throw it away yet, because the card’s serial number helps.
5 steps to replace it
What MTN lists as reasons
| Reason for swapping | Accepted? |
|---|---|
| Faulty SIM | Yes |
| Damaged, stolen or lost | Yes |
| Obsolete SIM, eligible for replacement | Yes |
| Upgrade to 4G | Yes |
| Any other legitimate reason | Yes |
Can you do it yourself?
A recent guide describes a self-service swap in the myMTN app for eligible prepaid customers. You need a blank, unregistered MTN SIM, and the app checks your face against your NIN record. If that check fails, you finish at a service centre. Not every customer sees this option, so check in your app.
Before you swap
- Save your contacts to your phone or account, since a damaged SIM may not give them up.
- Keep your NIN slip or Virtual NIN handy.
- Check that the shop is an MTN store or authorised outlet.
- Ask the price first. MTN’s pages call the charge a token fee without a fixed amount.
After the swap
Your old SIM stops working once the number moves, so keep it only until the new one is confirmed. Apps tied to your number, such as WhatsApp and banking apps, may ask you to verify again with a code sent to the new SIM.
Beware of swap fraud
Other ways to keep the same number
MTN’s SIM services menu lists eSIM and a Keep My Number option next to SIM swap. They suit different needs, so ask a store which one fits your phone.
Will I lose my number?
No. A swap moves your number to the new SIM.
Do I need to re-register?
The number must already be registered with your NIN. MTN may ask you to confirm details.
How long does it take?
MTN’s pages do not give a time. Many swaps finish during your visit.
