5 rules for clean PIN entry
What the code looks like
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| *311* | MTN’s common recharge code |
| The digits | The PIN from your card |
| # | Ends the command, then press call |
Recharging someone else’s line
Guides report the format *311*PIN*recipient’s number# for topping up another MTN line. MTN’s own help pages describe only *311*PIN# for your line, so test it with a small card first.
Other ways to load airtime
| Method | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Scratch card | Offline, any phone | Damaged PIN, reused card |
| e-PIN or logical card | Buying online | Keep the PIN private until you use it |
| myMTN app or bank app | No card needed | Network or channel downtime |
| VTU agent | Quick top-up | Confirm the amount in the SMS |
If dialling shows an error
- “Connection problem or invalid MMI code” usually means a typing slip. Re-enter the whole string.
- Old codes such as *555*PIN# still appear in guides, but MTN’s current pages use *311*PIN#.
- If the screen says invalid PIN, count the digits before you try again.
A worked example
Say your card shows 1234 5678 9012. Remove the spaces and dial *311*123456789012#. If your card has more digits, type every one of them in the same way, in the order printed. Press call once and wait for the SMS before you do anything else.
