MTN Recharge Failure: 6 Causes and Solutions
MTN Recharge Failure: 6 Causes and Solutions
What each message means, how to check if the recharge actually worked, and what to tell MTN.
A recharge that does not work usually has a boring cause. The screen message tells you which one. Match what you see to the table and fix it in a minute, before you call anyone.
6 causes and what to do
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid PIN | A mistyped digit, a missing digit or a damaged scratch panel | Count the digits, then retype the whole code |
| Card already used | The PIN was loaded earlier, maybe by an earlier attempt that did work | Dial *310# to check, then go back to the seller with the card |
| Connection problem or invalid MMI code | A typing slip in the dial string | Clear the screen and type *311*PIN# again |
| No reply or a timeout | Network or channel trouble | Wait a few minutes and retry. If it persists, try the app |
| Success, but airtime looks short | A loan was repaid from your recharge | Check whether you owe XtraTime or XtraByte |
| Success, but a bonus is missing | You did not use the offer code or you recharged outside the allowed range | See the offer rules, for example *161*PIN# for Welcome Back |
Step-by-step check
1. Dial *310# and read your balance. Many failed recharges actually worked.
2. Look at your last SMS from MTN. It states the amount credited.
3. Check the card: scratch panel complete, no torn digits.
4. Retry once with the exact code *311*PIN#.
5. If it fails again, keep the card and contact MTN.
The loan repayment trap
MTN says borrowed airtime or data is repaid automatically from your next recharge, with the service fee. So a ₦500 recharge may show much less if you owe a loan. That is the most common “I recharged but nothing came” story.
When the app or bank channel fails
Electronic channels sometimes go down. MTN has told customers in the past to use physical cards during an outage. A physical or logical card is the safe fallback.
What to tell MTN
- Your number and the time of the attempt.
- The amount and where you bought the card.
- The exact message you saw.
- Whether your balance changed in *310#.
Dial 300 from your MTN line to reach MTN. Keep the card, because a seller or MTN may need the PIN to trace it.
Should I try the same card again and again?
No. If the first try worked, a repeat returns an error. Check the balance first.
Why did I recharge ₦200 and get less?
A loan repayment or a deduction for an active service may have taken part of it.
Can a used card be refunded?
That is up to MTN and the seller. Bring the card and proof of purchase.
