MTN Ghana Roaming Bundles and Charges

Before you travel
Set up roaming before you leave Ghana: ask in the MyMTN app or on 100 whether roaming is active on your line, which roaming bundles exist for your destination and what they cost.

Using your phone abroad without a plan can be the most expensive way to use a phone. A few minutes of calls or a casual browse can eat through your airtime. Roaming bundles exist to avoid this, but they only help if you set them up before you need them. This guide explains how roaming works on MTN Ghana, what to check before you go, how to control costs while you are away and what to do when you return.

What roaming means

Roaming lets your phone use a partner network in another country while keeping your MTN Ghana number. Calls, texts and data are billed at roaming rates unless you have a roaming bundle. Rates and partner networks differ by country, and they can change, so always check current details.

Before you leave

  1. Check that roaming is enabled on your line. Ask in the app or call 100.
  2. Look at the bundle options for your destination.
  3. Make sure you have enough airtime or wallet funds, and keep a reserve.
  4. Update your phone and your apps on Wi-Fi.
  5. Download maps and important documents for offline use.
  6. Tell family how to reach you by messaging apps.
  7. Save the customer care number and note how to call it from abroad.
Ask about your destination
Roaming works with partner networks, so coverage and rates depend on the country. Confirm yours before you go.

Choose how you will stay connected

Option Good for Watch out for
Roaming bundle Regular use of data, calls and texts Validity and which networks it covers
Pay as you go roaming A very short trip with little use High per-unit rates; costs add up quickly
Wi-Fi only Hotels, cafes and offices Public Wi-Fi security
Local SIM at the destination Long stays and heavy data use You will have a different number; keep your Ghana SIM for codes

Control costs while abroad

  • Turn off background data and automatic updates.
  • Turn off data roaming unless you need it or you have a bundle.
  • Use messaging apps over Wi-Fi instead of calls on the network.
  • Download videos and music before you travel.
  • Use offline maps.
  • Check your balance daily.
  • Switch to airplane mode and use Wi-Fi in places with an expensive signal.

Receiving calls abroad

You may pay to receive calls while roaming. Ask family to use messaging apps and call back only when needed. For important calls, tell people the best time to call and keep them short.

Mobile money and banking codes

Verification codes for banking and mobile money usually arrive as SMS on your Ghana number. If you will not use roaming, you may not receive them. Plan ahead: keep roaming enabled for SMS, or set up another way to receive codes before you go.

If you see a surprise charge

Charges for data I did not use
Apps may use data in the background. Check usage settings and ask customer care to review.
Messages say roaming bundle ended
Check the validity, buy another or turn off data.
Cannot get a signal
Select the network manually in settings and try partner networks one by one.

When you return

  1. Turn data roaming off.
  2. Check your balance and compare it with your expectations.
  3. Review messages for charges.
  4. Call 100 if anything looks wrong.
  5. Reset your phone to automatic network selection.

A packing checklist for your phone

  • A charger and a power bank, because navigation and hotspots drain batteries.
  • A plug adapter for the country you visit.
  • Screenshots of tickets, bookings and addresses.
  • Offline copies of your ID and important documents, stored securely.
  • A note of emergency numbers at your destination.

Short trip or long stay?

For a weekend away, a small roaming bundle and Wi-Fi at your hotel are usually enough. For a month or more, compare the cost of roaming with a local SIM. A local SIM is often cheaper for long stays, but remember that your Ghana number will not work for calls and messages unless the SIM stays active in the phone or a second phone. Keep your main number alive for banking codes and mobile money.

Questions people ask

Will my number stay the same?
Yes. Roaming keeps your MTN Ghana number.
Can I use mobile money abroad?
Some services may work and others may not. Check with customer care before you go.
How do I avoid bill shock?
Buy a bundle, turn off background data and check your balance every day.

Roaming is easy to set up and easy to forget. Do it before you leave, set your phone to save data, use Wi-Fi when you can and check your balance each day.
