MTN Roaming Bill Shock: How ₦30.72 Per MB Adds Up
MTN International Data Roaming Charges Explained: What 100MB and 1GB Really Cost
The ₦30.72 per MB rate, the TravelPass alternative and how to avoid a shock bill.
What roaming costs without a plan
| Data used | Cost at ₦30.72/MB |
|---|---|
| 10MB (a few web pages) | About ₦307 |
| 100MB (some video calls) | About ₦3,072 |
| 500MB | About ₦15,360 |
| 1GB | About ₦31,457 |
MTN’s TravelPass page also says that without a TravelPass, voice and data are charged from your airtime or credit limit. Heavy use drains a prepaid balance quickly.
What a TravelPass changes
| Plan | Price | Data or minutes | Cost per MB if data |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day voice+data | ₦5,000 | 10 mins OR 20 SMS + 250MB | About ₦20 |
| 7 days data | ₦10,000 | 1GB | About ₦10 |
| 30 days data | ₦40,000 | 5GB | About ₦8 |
| 30 days data | ₦80,000 | 10GB | About ₦8 |
On data alone, TravelPass costs roughly a third of pay-as-you-go roaming. The 1-day plan is dearer per MB, but it bundles minutes.
5 ways to avoid bill shock
Other charges to know
- Calls and SMS outside a TravelPass are charged from your balance.
- In some countries, incoming minutes under TravelPass are capped at 20% of the voice allowance.
- Calls to countries not covered by the pass use standard rates.
- Voice in the USA and Australia needs VoLTE.
A worked trip
Say you travel for a week and expect to use about 1GB for maps, chats and email. Without a plan, that is about ₦31,500. A 7-day data TravelPass at ₦10,000 gives you 1GB, so you would save roughly ₦21,500. If you also need minutes, a voice plan is separate, so compare what you need.
Postpaid customers
MTN’s TravelPass page says postpaid usage is charged to the credit limit. Ask MTN about limits before you travel, because a big roaming bill can use it up.
Is incoming roaming free?
Not necessarily. Incoming minutes are covered by TravelPass up to its caps. Otherwise they are charged.
Does the myMTN app show roaming offers?
Yes. It has a TravelPass section and sends a location notice for roaming offers.
Can I buy for a traveller?
Yes, MTN says you can buy TravelPass for family and friends.
