MTN International Roaming Plans and Codes: What Works Today
The cost of roaming without a plan, the TravelPass route and the codes to know.
Taking your MTN line abroad works, but without a plan the bill can surprise you. The safest route is to buy a roaming plan before you fly, and to know the codes that go with it.
What roaming without a plan costs
MTN’s data page lists hybrid roaming data at ₦30.72 per MB. At that rate, 1GB would cost about ₦31,000. MTN’s TravelPass page says that without a TravelPass, voice and data usage is charged from your airtime or credit limit.

Set it up in 6 steps
1. Check that your destination is on the TravelPass list.
2. Buy a plan before you go, by dialling *312*6# or through the myMTN app.
3. Make sure you have airtime for any extras.
4. Switch on data roaming in your phone’s settings when you land.
5. Wait for MTN’s welcome message on arrival, which shows roaming offers.
6. Check your balance with *310# from time to time.
Other codes MTN lists
MTN’s TravelPass page lists *312*6*1#, *123*4*1# and *904# as ways to reach the TravelPass menu, and *312*6*6# or *310# to check your plan. Older guides give *131# for roaming, but MTN’s current pages point to the TravelPass codes.
Cost-saving habits
- Buy the plan before you leave, so you are not tempted to browse on pay-as-you-go.
- Use hotel or cafe Wi-Fi for large downloads and updates.
- Turn off background refresh for apps while abroad.
- Check your balance with *310# at the end of each day.
6 checks if roaming does not work
- Data roaming is switched off on the phone.
- You are in a country or on a network not covered.
- Your balance or plan has run out.
- The destination needs VoLTE for voice, as in the USA and Australia.
- The phone is locked to another network or in the wrong network mode.
- Restart and choose the network manually.
Do I need to tell MTN I am travelling?
MTN’s pages do not ask for this, but buying a plan before you go is wise.
Can I buy roaming for someone else?
Yes, MTN lets you buy TravelPass for family and friends.
Can I use the app abroad?
MTN says its customers use it free. Check whether that holds abroad before you rely on it, and use Wi-Fi where you can.
