Should You Move to MTN Postpaid? A Monthly Cost Test

MTN lists one consumer postpaid plan prominently, XtraSpecial Postpaid. Whether it saves you money depends on how much you call and use data. Here are the numbers MTN publishes.

Side by side

Item Prepaid XtraSpecial Postpaid
Call rate BetaGist 33k/sec, MTN X 25k/sec, Pulse 23k/sec 20k/sec (₦12/min)
Daily or monthly fee MTN X: ₦10 a day None

25GB monthly ₦9,000 ₦7,000
Per GB ₦360 ₦280

A monthly cost test

Take 120 minutes of calls and 25GB of data in a month:

Plan Calls Data Total
BetaGist ₦2,376 ₦9,000 ₦11,376
Pulse ₦1,656 ₦9,000 ₦10,656
XtraSpecial Postpaid ₦1,440 ₦7,000 ₦8,440

On these listed prices, postpaid saves roughly ₦2,200 to ₦2,900 a month for this usage. With less usage, the gap shrinks.

How to move

Have your BVN ready.
2
Dial *409# and enter your BVN.
3
Follow the prompts and wait for MTN’s confirmation.
4
Subscribe to the postpaid bundle you want.

What MTN’s page does not say

  • How billing, credit limits or deposits work.
  • Whether you can return to prepaid, and how fast.
  • What happens if you miss a payment.

Ask MTN on 300 or at a store before you migrate, and get the answers in writing.

Cost traps to check

  • Out-of-bundle use, which can add up if you pass the plan.
  • International calls and roaming, which are charged separately.
  • Bundles you forget to cancel.
  • Late-payment terms, which MTN does not state on its help page.

Add these to your monthly estimate. A plan that looks cheaper on the rate card can cost more if you often go outside the bundle.

Who should stay prepaid

  • People who want to control spending with a balance.
  • Light users, whose bills are small anyway.
  • Anyone who relies on prepaid perks such as Pulse night bundles.
  • People who may travel or change networks soon.

What you lose when you leave prepaid

  • BetaGist is for prepaid customers only, so its give-back minutes end.
  • Pulse Points are lost if you leave Pulse.
  • Postpaid data bundles are open only to postpaid customers.
Rule of thumb: If your monthly spend on calls and data is well above ₦8,000 and you want steady billing, postpaid is worth a close look.

Is postpaid cheaper for light users?

Not necessarily. Compare your own minutes and data.

Does postpaid work for roaming?

MTN says postpaid roaming usage is charged to the credit limit.

Do I need a BVN?

Yes, for the *409# migration.
