MTN Benin Internet Settings and APN
What an APN is
APN means Access Point Name. It is the address your phone uses to reach the mobile internet through the network. If the address is missing or wrong, your phone may show signal bars and still have no data.
Try the automatic setup first
- Insert the SIM and restart the phone. Many phones fetch the settings alone.
- Switch mobile data on.
- Wait one or two minutes, then open a web page.
- If a page loads, you do not need to change anything.
Manual setup is only for the cases where automatic setup failed, where you use a new or imported phone, or where you moved the SIM to a router or MiFi.
Get the right values
APN values can differ by plan and device type, and they can be updated. For that reason, do not copy settings from a random post or a friend’s screenshot. Ask MTN customer care, an MTN shop or the MyMTN BN app for the values that match your line. Write them down exactly, with the same capital letters, dots and dashes.
A wrong APN can block your data, and some copied lists are wrong or belong to another country. Use values given for your own MTN Benin line.
Set it up on Android
| 1 | Open Settings and go to the SIM or Mobile network section. |
| 2 | Choose your MTN SIM if you have more than one. |
| 3 | Tap Access Point Names. |
| 4 | Tap the plus sign or New APN. |
| 5 | Enter a name, then the APN value you were given. Add a username and password only if MTN gave them. |
| 6 | Leave every other field as it is, unless you were told to change it. |
| 7 | Save, select the new APN and restart the phone. |
Set it up on iPhone
Open Settings, then Mobile Data or Cellular, then Mobile Data Network. Enter the APN under the Mobile Data section, add the username and password if you were given any, and leave the rest alone. Restart the phone. If you cannot see the APN fields, your SIM may be set by the operator and you should ask MTN.
Fields explained
| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Name | Any label you choose, such as MTN |
| APN | The address given by MTN for your line |
| Username and password | Leave blank unless MTN gave you values |
| Proxy and port | Usually blank for internet |
| MMSC | Used for picture messages only |
Check that it worked
Turn mobile data off and on, open a web page, then open a messaging app. If a page loads but a messaging app does not, check that the app is allowed to use mobile data and that a data saver is off.
If the internet still does not work
Check that you have a bundle or enough credit. Without either, data may be blocked or billed at high rates.
Leave roaming off while you are in Benin. Turn it on only when you travel and know the charges.
Choose automatic or the highest mode your phone supports, such as 4G.
Ask an MTN shop whether the card should be replaced.
A locked phone may refuse the SIM. Ask where you bought it.
Using the SIM in a router or MiFi
Devices like routers have their own settings page. Enter the same APN there, then restart the device. Place it near a window for a better signal, and check that your bundle allows use on that kind of device.
Mistakes to avoid
- Typing a capital letter where the value uses a small one.
- Adding a space at the end of the APN.
- Creating several APNs and leaving the wrong one selected.
- Changing proxy or port fields without being told to.
- Blaming the APN when the real problem is an empty bundle.
If you are unsure, take a photo of your screen and show it to an agent at an MTN shop. It is quicker than trying random changes.
Questions people ask
No. The APN stays the same unless MTN tells you otherwise.
Yes, but select only one at a time.
A network reset can remove it, so keep your values written down.
Closing note
Most data problems come from bundles, signal or network mode, not from the APN. Check those first, then touch the APN only with the right values in hand.
