How to Check MTN Network Coverage: 5 Ways Before You Move or Buy
How to Check MTN Network Coverage: 5 Ways Before You Move or Buy
Maps, phone tests, signal numbers and what the icons mean.
5 ways to check coverage
1. MTN’s website. MTN has published a 4G coverage map on its site, and its 5G page is the place to check 5G. Maps show the intended reach, so treat them as a guide.
2. Your phone at the spot. Stand where you will use data, with an MTN SIM, and watch the icon and the bars.
3. A speed test. Run it there for two minutes to see real speed.
4. Ask people nearby. Neighbours and shop owners know how MTN behaves on that street.
5. Ask MTN. Dial 300 or visit a store and give the exact address.
Read your signal strength
On Android, open Settings, then About phone, then SIM status and look for signal strength in dBm. The closer to zero, the stronger the signal. As a rule of thumb:
| Signal (dBm) | Quality |
|---|---|
| -50 to -85 | Excellent |
| -85 to -100 | Good |
| -100 to -110 | Fair, may be slow indoors |
| Below -110 | Poor, calls and data may drop |
What the icon means
| Icon | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E or 2G | Basic, slow data |
| H, H+ or 3G | Moderate speed |
| 4G or LTE | Fast data, MTN’s main data network |
| 5G | Only where MTN has 5G, on a 5G phone |
A 3-minute test you can do anywhere
Stand in the exact spot, switch your MTN phone to automatic network mode, wait one minute for it to settle and note the icon. Then run a speed test twice, a minute apart, and write down the results. Repeat in the evening. Three readings tell you much more than a map does.
Maps are not the same as walls
A map can show coverage on your street while your room has a weak signal. Concrete walls, basements and tall buildings can block it. Test inside the room where you will use data.
If coverage is weak
- Use data near a window, or on a higher floor.
- Check whether your phone supports the right bands for MTN, which are B3 and B7 for 4G.
- Turn off battery savers that limit signal scanning.
- Ask MTN about their options if you rely on the line for work.
Is the coverage map always right?
It is a guide. Real signal can differ by building and time of day.
Does coverage differ for calls and data?
Yes. You can have a call signal where data is slow.
Does 5G cover everywhere?
No. MTN says 5G works only in coverage areas.
