MTN SMS Bundles and Subscription Codes: What Exists Today

Searching for an MTN SMS bundle can lead to old pages. MTN’s current plan pages do not list a standalone SMS bundle. Texts come in other forms, and you can cut the cost in a few ways.

What an SMS costs

Plan SMS rate
Pulse ₦6 per SMS
XtraSpecial Postpaid ₦6 per SMS, on-net and off-net
XtraValue out of bundle ₦6 per SMS

These rates come from MTN’s own help pages. Check your own plan page if you are on another tariff.

Where SMS comes bundled

1
XtraValue bundles combine minutes, SMS and data. Dial *312*5# to see the amounts.
2
TravelPass gives either minutes or SMS while roaming. The ₦10,000 weekly voice plan, for example, gives up to 50 minutes or 100 SMS.
3
Voice or combo plans from time to time. Check MTN’s menu, because offers change.

5 ways to cut your SMS costs

  • Use a chat app on mobile data for most messages.
  • Pick an XtraValue bundle if you send many texts and make calls.
  • Switch off paid subscriptions that send daily texts. Dial *305# for a list.
  • Block promotional texts by using the 2442 Do-Not-Disturb line.
  • Avoid premium numbers and short codes unless you know the price.

Check how many SMS you have left

Dial *310# for your balance. On bundle plans such as XtraValue, the balance message lists your bundle SMS next to minutes and data. In the myMTN app, open your plan or bundle page.

Reading your SMS charges

Look at the balance message after you send a text. If it drops by ₦6 for each short message, you are on pay-as-you-go rates. A long message counts as several parts, so a message of three parts can cost ₦18. Keeping messages short saves money.

Sending bulk SMS

If you send messages to many people for a business, a regular line is not built for it. Companies use registered bulk SMS services, which have sender names and delivery reports. Check the provider is registered and that your messages follow the regulator’s rules on marketing.

Old codes on blogs: older lists show SMS bundle codes that MTN’s current pages do not confirm. Do not pay for one without checking the confirmation message.

Is there an SMS-only bundle?

I found none on MTN’s current pages.

Are SMS to other networks charged more?

MTN’s postpaid page lists the same ₦6 on-net and off-net.

Why was I charged for an SMS I did not send?

It may come from a subscription or a premium number. Check *305#.
