MTN Airtime Disappearing: 8 Causes and Solutions
MTN Airtime Disappearing: 8 Causes and Solutions
Pay-as-you-go, auto-renewals, loan repayments and other quiet deductions, with fixes.
Airtime does not vanish. It moves, in small deductions that are easy to miss: a few seconds of a call, a megabyte of browsing, a plan that renewed overnight. Here are the eight places to look, with the rates MTN publishes.
8 causes and where to check
| Cause | What happens | How to check or stop |
|---|---|---|
| Pay-as-you-go browsing | After your bundle ends, browsing costs ₦3.07/MB if you opted in | Dial *312*201# to opt out |
| Auto-renewing data plan | The plan buys itself again from airtime | Send NO plus the plan code to 312 |
| Loan repayment | XtraTime or XtraByte plus fee is taken from your next recharge | Know what you owe before you recharge |
| Unwanted service | A paid value-added subscription is billing you | Open the *305# menu, and reply STOP to the sender |
| Bundle used up | Calls and SMS fall back to the main balance, for example 30k/sec on XtraValue and ₦6 per SMS | Check bundle balance with *323*4# |
| Roaming | Hybrid roaming data is charged at ₦30.72/MB | Switch off data abroad |
| Plan call rate | Per-second billing adds up, for example 33k/sec on BetaGist | Compare plans in the myMTN app |
| Airtime sharing | A transfer you or someone using your phone made | Check your SMS history |
What small charges add up to
| Activity | Cost |
|---|---|
| 10 minutes on BetaGist (33k/sec) | ₦198 |
| 10 minutes on Pulse (23k/sec) | ₦138 |
| 100MB on pay-as-you-go | ₦307 |
| 1 SMS | ₦6 |
The pay-as-you-go rate adds up fast. 100MB costs ₦307, while the 1GB daily bundle at ₦500 works out to about ₦50 per 100MB. Even a short session after your bundle ends can cost more than a bundle would have.
An example
Say your bundle ends at night and pay-as-you-go is on. You scroll for ten minutes and use about 50MB. That is ₦153.50 gone, without any warning on the screen. Add a few minutes of calls on a per-second plan and a ₦500 recharge can look empty by morning.
Trace it in 4 steps
Stop it from happening again
- Choose One-off when you buy a data plan, so it does not renew.
- Use the 2442 Do-Not-Disturb line to cut promotional messages.
- Turn mobile data off when your bundle ends and you do not want pay-as-you-go.
- Look at the airtime balance after you buy a plan.
Is my airtime being stolen?
Usually not. The charges come from the sources in the table. If you cannot explain a deduction, dial 300.
Can I get a refund?
MTN decides case by case. Have the dates and amounts ready.
