How to Migrate to MTN BetaTalk: Is It Still Available? What to Do Instead
How to Migrate to MTN BetaTalk: Is It Still Available? What to Do Instead
Why BetaTalk codes are unreliable now, and how to move to the plan that replaced it.
You searched for BetaTalk because someone told you it was the best plan MTN ever had. People who used it often say the same thing. The catch is that the plan you are looking for may no longer exist.
What happened to BetaTalk?
1. BetaTalk was known for giving bonus airtime when you recharged.
2. In 2025, Nigeria’s tariff rules changed and mobile networks revised their plans.
3. MTN began using BetaGist as the default plan for new SIM registrations.
4. Old guides kept the BetaTalk codes online, and they still circulate.
Should you dial the old code?
Guides still list *123*2*1# and the SMS keyword BT for BetaTalk. MTN’s own pages do not confirm either. If you try them, read the reply carefully before you accept any change, because a second plan switch in 30 days can cost money.
5 differences: BetaTalk and BetaGist
| Point | BetaTalk | BetaGist |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Not on MTN’s current menu | Listed by MTN |
| Call rate | Varied by source (about 31 to 42k/sec reported) | 33k/sec flat (₦19.80/min) |
| Extras | Recharge bonus airtime (reported) | 3 minutes back for every 6 you use |
| New SIMs | No longer assigned | Default plan |
| Official support | No migration steps on MTN’s pages | Zigi, app and SMS keyword to 312 |
Move to BetaGist in 3 ways
1. Zigi: choose Tariff plan, then Personal, then BetaGist.
2. myMTN app: select your tariff name, open the tariff plans page and choose BetaGist.
3. SMS: send the plan keyword to 312. BG is the keyword reported for BetaGist.
Every prepaid customer can move to BetaGist, but postpaid customers cannot. Your first migration in 30 days is free.
How BetaGist’s give-back minutes work
MTN says that for every 6 minutes of calls you make, you get 3 minutes back. The count resets at 00:00 every Monday, and the give-back is capped at 6,000 minutes a month. If you leave BetaGist, the minutes you were given back cannot be used.
If cheaper calls are the goal
- MTN X charges 25k/sec with a ₦10 daily access fee.
- XtraSpecial Postpaid charges 20k/sec but needs a BVN-based migration.
- XtraValue bundles bring the per-minute rate down to ₦10.80 while the bundle lasts.
Is BetaTalk coming back?
MTN has not announced that. Check Zigi or the app for the latest plans.
Why do some sites still show a BetaTalk code?
They copied older guides and did not update them.
Will I lose my data if I switch?
Your data bundles are separate from your voice plan, so they are not removed by changing plans.
