MTN Uganda Internet Settings and APN
You put in the SIM, buy a bundle and the browser says there is no connection. Often the problem is not the bundle and not the network. It is a setting on the phone. Internet settings, called APN settings, tell your phone how to reach mobile data. This guide explains what an APN is, how to check it, how to add it and what else to try when data still refuses to work.
What an APN is
APN means Access Point Name. It is the gateway between your phone and the mobile internet. When it is missing or wrong, calls and texts can work normally while data does not. New phones, new SIMs and replaced SIMs are the usual cases.
Check the basics first
- Make sure you have an active bundle or enough airtime. Dial *131# to see your airtime.
- Switch mobile data on and airplane mode off.
- Restart the phone with the SIM inside.
- Check that you have signal.
- Try the SIM in another phone if you can.
Check the APN on Android
| 1 | Open Settings. |
| 2 | Go to Connections or Network, then Mobile networks. |
| 3 | Tap Access Point Names. |
| 4 | Look for an MTN entry and check that it is selected. |
Add an APN on Android
| 1 | In Access Point Names, tap the plus or New APN button. |
| 2 | Enter a name such as MTN Internet. |
| 3 | Enter the APN value that MTN Uganda gives for your service. Confirm it in the MyMTN app or with customer care on 100. |
| 4 | Leave the other fields as they are unless told otherwise. |
| 5 | Save, select the new entry and switch mobile data off and on. |
APN values can differ by service and can change. Confirm what to type with MTN Uganda rather than copying it from a forum or a friend.
iPhone
On an iPhone, open Settings, then Mobile Data, then Mobile Data Network, and enter the APN value in the cellular data section. Many iPhones load carrier settings by themselves and an update may show a prompt. Accept it and restart.
Other things that stop data
| Symptom | Likely cause | Try this |
|---|---|---|
| Bundle bought, no internet | Wrong or missing APN | Check and add the APN |
| Works on Wi-Fi only | Mobile data is off | Switch it on |
| Slow after a few minutes | Weak signal or congestion | Move or change network mode |
| Some apps work, some do not | Bundle covers certain apps only | Read the bundle details |
| Stops abroad | Roaming is off | Check roaming settings |
Network mode
If your phone is set to a mode your area does not support, you may get a slow connection. Try Auto, or switch between 4G and 3G for a while. Go back to Auto when signal improves.
Reset network settings
If nothing works, resetting network settings can clear stubborn errors. This removes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings, so use it last. Restart afterwards, switch data on and test with a small page.
Hotspot and tethering
If sharing your connection fails, a separate APN type may apply for tethering. Check that your entry supports all data types or ask customer care. Also check that your bundle allows sharing.
Test after every change
- Switch mobile data off and on.
- Open a light page.
- Send a small message in a chat app.
- Check the data balance to see that it is being used.
The signal may be unstable. Lock the mode to 4G or 3G and test again.
Select the old entry again or reset the list to default.
When to call customer care
- Everything looks right and there is still no data.
- The SIM works in another phone but not yours.
- You are charged for data you cannot use.
- You cannot find an APN entry at all.
Have your number, phone model and the exact message on your screen ready, then call 100.
Questions people ask
Often the phone loads it itself. Add it only when data fails after the basics are checked.
No. Your bundle belongs to your number, not the phone.
APN problems are frustrating but usually easy to fix. Check the basics, confirm the right value, add the entry, restart and test. If it still fails, get help instead of buying more data.
