MTN Rwanda Data Auto-Renewal Cancellation; Causes of Unexpected Deductions

When money leaves your balance and you cannot see why, the answer is almost always a bundle or a service you bought or joined. Here is how to trace it and stop it from happening again.

Find the source in 4 steps

1. Read your last SMS messages from MTN. Every purchase or deduction normally has one.

2. Dial *345*5# to see which data bundles are active and when they end.

3. Dial *131# to see your airtime and compare it with the last time you checked.

4. Open *140# to see any voice pack you may have bought.

The usual causes

Cause How to spot it What to do
A bundle you bought again by habit An SMS naming the bundle Read the confirmation before you accept next time
A voice pack Shows in the *140# menu Let it expire, or do not buy again
A third-party service An SMS from a short code Reply as instructed, or ask customer care to stop it
Out-of-bundle browsing Airtime drops with no bundle active Switch off mobile data when a bundle ends
MoMo airtime purchase A MoMo SMS Check your MoMo history with *182#

How to stop deductions

  • Use the confirmation screen to decline repeats you did not intend.
  • Turn mobile data off when your bundle ends.
  • Ask MTN Rwanda customer care on 100 to stop a service you did not choose.
  • Keep your PIN private, so nobody buys things from your wallet.

What to tell customer care

Give your number, the date and amount of each deduction, and the SMS you received. Ask them to name the bundle or service and to cancel it. Write down what they say and any reference number.

Do not share your PIN or OTP with someone who says they can cancel a charge for you. Only customer care on 100 or an MTN service centre can do that.

Prevent it next time

  • Buy bundles deliberately from the *345# menu and read each screen.
  • Do not reply YES to messages you do not recognise.
  • Check your balance daily for a week after you change anything.
Tip: Because GWAMON expires on Sunday midnight, it is a good bundle to check on Monday morning and decide whether to buy again.

Does MTN Rwanda renew data bundles by itself?

Bundles are normally bought by you. If one repeated, ask customer care which service did it.

How do I know a bundle has ended?

Dial *345*5# and look at the expiry.

Can I get a refund?

Ask customer care, giving dates, amounts and your SMS.
