MTN South Sudan Internet Settings and APN
Set it up on Android
| 1 | Open Settings, then tap Mobile network, or Connections, then Mobile networks. |
| 2 | Choose the SIM that holds your MTN line, if your phone has two. |
| 3 | Tap Access Point Names. On some phones this sits under Advanced. |
| 4 | Check whether an MTN entry already exists and is selected. If it is, test your data before you change anything. |
| 5 | If it is missing, tap the add button and enter the details MTN gave you. |
| 6 | Save, select the new entry, then switch mobile data off and on. |
Set it up on iPhone
- Open Settings, then Mobile Data or Cellular.
- Tap Mobile Data Network or Cellular Data Network.
- Type the details MTN gave you in the Mobile Data section.
- Leave other fields as they are unless MTN tells you otherwise.
- Go back, restart the phone and test.
Settings pasted in group chats or sent by a stranger can be wrong or unsafe. Use details that come from MTN care, an MTN shop or the MTN menu on your phone.
What an APN is
APN stands for access point name. It is the gateway your phone uses to reach the internet over MTN’s network. If the gateway name is wrong, your phone may show signal bars and still fail to load a page.
Your SIM usually pushes the right APN to the phone when you insert it. Problems start when you swap SIMs, use an old phone, install a custom ROM or reset the network settings.
Fields you may see
| Field | What to do |
|---|---|
| Name | Any label you like, such as MTN |
| APN | Enter the value MTN gives you. Do not guess it |
| Username and password | Leave blank unless MTN says they are needed |
| Proxy and port | Leave blank unless MTN says otherwise |
| MMSC | Only needed for picture messaging. Ask MTN for it if you use MMS |
| Authentication type | Keep the default unless told to change it |
| APN type | Normally default, or default plus supl. Follow MTN’s instruction |
| Roaming protocol | Keep the default |
Ask MTN for the current details
Call 100, or message 0920002200 on WhatsApp, and say: “Please send me the internet settings for my phone model.” Many networks can push a configuration message to your handset. If you receive one, save it and restart.
You can also visit an MTN shop. Staff can check your phone and enter the right details while you wait.
Before you blame the APN
- Do you have an active data bundle or enough airtime?
- Is mobile data switched on?
- Is the phone in airplane mode?
- Are you in an area with 3G or 4G coverage, not just a weak 2G signal?
- Is the right SIM chosen for data on a dual SIM phone?
Fix these first. They solve most internet problems faster than any APN change.
Common problems and fixes
Check the data switch and bundle, then check that the APN entry is selected.
A network reset deletes APNs. Re-enter the details or ask MTN to push them again.
Some phones restore their default entry. Make sure your entry is the one with the filled circle or tick.
Some locked phones hide it. Visit an MTN shop or the phone maker’s support.
You may be missing the MMS settings. Ask customer care whether MMS is supported on your line.
Test your connection after each change
After you save an APN, turn mobile data off and on, then open a simple page in your browser. Do not test with a heavy app first, because a big download can drain a small bundle while you are still fixing the problem. If the page loads, you are done. If it does not, change only one thing at a time, and test again. Changing five things at once hides the real cause.
Keep your data safe
- Use settings only from MTN.
- Keep a screenshot of the working APN.
- Remove unknown APN entries.
- Switch off mobile data for apps that update in the background.
Questions people ask
Often no. The phone loads settings from the SIM. If data fails, then check.
The same idea applies. The device has its own settings page, and the name MTN gives you goes there.
No. 4G depends on coverage and phone support. APN only opens the door to the data service.
Wrap-up
Try the simple checks first, then confirm the APN with MTN and enter it carefully. Test your connection after each change so you know which step fixed it.
