MTN SIM Not Recognised: 8 Causes and Solutions
Contacts, slots, phone locks and swaps, with a quick test to find which one it is.
When a phone says No SIM or Invalid SIM, the fault is usually small: dust, a loose tray or a setting. Work through the eight causes before you buy a new SIM.
8 causes and solutions

Test in 4 steps
1Power off the phone and take out the SIM.
2Look at the card for scratches or bends.
3Put it into another phone and check for signal.
4Put a different SIM into your phone to test the slot.
Look after your SIM
- Do not bend or cut the SIM to fit a smaller tray.
- Keep it away from water and heat.
- Handle it by the edges, without touching the gold contacts.
- Keep a record of your number and your NIN details for quick swaps.
If the SIM works in another phone
Then the first phone’s slot or software is the problem. Update it, reset network settings, or take it to a repair shop.
If it fails in every phone
Then the SIM is the problem. Visit an MTN store with your NIN for a SIM swap. MTN lists damaged and faulty SIMs as valid reasons, and your number moves to the new SIM.
After a swap, still not working
- Wait a few minutes for activation.
- Restart the phone.
- Make sure the new SIM is the one selected for voice and data.
- Check the line is registered and linked to your NIN.
- Return to the store if there is still no service.
Sudden loss of signal on a working SIM may mean someone swapped it without you. Call 300 right away and tell your bank.
Can a SIM stop working if it is not used?
Operators can deactivate unused lines. Ask MTN about your number.
Will I lose my number?
A swap moves your number to the new SIM.
