MTN Subscription Failed but Airtime Was Deducted: 6 Steps to Fix It
MTN Subscription Failed but Airtime Was Deducted: 6 Steps to Fix It
What to check first, the evidence to keep and how to escalate if the plan never arrives.
You dialled a code, the screen said failed, and your airtime dropped anyway. Before you assume the money is gone, check what really happened. Many charges turn into a plan a few minutes later.
6 steps to sort it out
5 reasons a charge shows but no plan appears
| Cause | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Delayed activation | The plan appears minutes later |
| Wrong code or keyword | You were charged for a different plan |
| Duplicate purchase | Two attempts, two charges |
| Pay-as-you-go deduction | Browsing after a bundle ended |
| Auto-renewal | A plan renewed from airtime |
What to save as evidence
- A screenshot of the failure message.
- Your balance before and after, with the time.
- The SMS from MTN, even if it says the plan failed.
- The exact code or keyword you used.
How to avoid it next time
- Buy plans on a steady connection, not in a weak signal area.
- Wait for the confirmation SMS before you try again.
- Use the myMTN app or the menu, so you can see the plan name and price first.
- Save the confirmation messages for your records.
What to say to MTN
Be direct: say that you tried to buy a named plan at a given time, that you were charged an amount, and that the plan did not activate. Ask for either activation or a reversal. Note the ticket number.
If MTN does not fix it
Telecom customers should lodge a complaint with their provider first, and later escalate to the NCC on 622 or through its consumer portal if they are not satisfied. The NCC’s service is free.
How long should I wait?
MTN’s pages do not give a time. If nothing shows after a short wait, contact MTN and ask.
Will MTN refund me?
It decides case by case. Evidence helps.
Is a failed USSD screen always a failure?
No. The screen can fail while the purchase goes through.
