MTN Number Portability: Requirements and Process
MTN Number Portability: Requirements and Process
The NCC’s conditions, the PORT to 3232 step and what to check before you switch.
Keeping your number while changing networks is a regulated right in Nigeria. The rules come from the NCC, and the process is simple once you know the conditions.
What you need before you port
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| An active, registered SIM | Your SIM must be registered with your current operator |
| Valid ID with a photo | You prove who you are at the new operator |
| SIM serial number | You will be asked for it |
| No unpaid bills | Clear outstanding charges first |
| 90 days | You can port only once every 90 days |
How to port in 5 steps
What happens to your balance
Airtime and data do not move with you. The NCC advises using them up before you port. Back up your contacts and messages too.
Cost
The NCC says there is no charge for porting. Ask the store to confirm that the new SIM is free.
Timeline at a glance
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 0 | You get the new SIM and send PORT to 3232 |
| Within 24 to 48 hours | The number moves, according to the NCC |
| Then | Insert the new SIM and test calls, data and SMS |
| Next 90 days | You cannot port again |
Before you decide
- Check coverage at home and work, because the new network may be weaker.
- Compare data and voice plans, since your old plan will not follow you.
- Ask what your default tariff will be after you switch.
- Remember you cannot port again for 90 days.
Porting to MTN
MTN accepts port-in requests at its stores and authorised outlets. After the switch, check *123*1*2# to see which tariff plan you are on, and compare plans with the myMTN app.
Can I port a postpaid line?
The NCC says portability is available to prepaid and postpaid customers.
Will I keep my NIN link?
Your number must stay registered. Confirm the link with *996# after porting.
What if the port fails?
Contact the new operator and the old one. Keep your reference numbers.
